A hairline fracture is a thin crack in a bone, and a non-displaced fracture is a break where the bone ends remain in their normal position. These usually heal well with proper support, and a fibre cast or slab is often used to keep the area still. A confirming X-ray is important.
What the consultation can include
- Review of your X-ray or report confirming the fracture
- Fibre cast, slab or splint to protect the area
- Advice on rest, elevation and gradual return to activity
- Follow-up checks to see that the bone is healing in position
When to consider a consultation
- Pain and tenderness over a bone after a fall or twist
- An X-ray report shows a hairline or non-displaced fracture
- Swelling that does not settle after a minor injury
- A cast is needed but travelling is difficult
